In this series, we're featuring classic Mardi Gras songs and the stories behind them.
This episode delves into Wilson 'Willie Tee' Turbinton's and Big Chief Bo Dollis and the Wild Magnolias' song 'New Suit' through conversations with the writers, now both deceased. The men aimed to capture the spirit of the Indians and lay it down for others to hear and experience.
"Doing those two albums were some of the most spiritually rewarding times I've had in my career," says Willie Tee. "What makes a great Mardi Gras song? Funk. New Orleans funk. You get some good funky musicians behind you; that would make a great Mardi Gras song."
"I love to mask Indian and that's the bottom line," says Dollis.
