Dear Listener,
WWOZ’s Gulf Aid benefit concert for our devastated coastal community last month sparked a cascade of similar local events, like Jonathan Ferrara Gallery's Gulf Aid Art exhibition (June 17-19). You can also download “It Ain’t My Fault” by the Gulf Aid AllStars — Lenny Kravitz, Mos Def, Trombone Shorty, Tim Robbins and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band — on iTunes, and part of the proceeds go to Gulf coast relief efforts.
In other news, WWOZ has been nominated in Gambit’s first annual Web Awards for two honors: Best Radio Station Web site and Best Mobile App. Vote to let 'em know "who dat"! And the Louisiana senate has authorized WWOZ’s “Guardian of the Groove” license plates, which will be available later this year.
We hope you enjoyed our live broadcasts from the DC Jazz Fest (thanks to the Fest board and staff for their superb hospitality) and the Louisiana Cajun-Zydeco Fest. We've got plenty more on the way this month, so stay tuned.
Yours in thunder storms and termite swarms,
David Freedman
General Manager
BP Oil Disaster Resources
WWOZ has compiled a list of online resources related to the ongoing BP oil disaster now affecting four states in the Gulf of Mexico. Whether you've been directly affected by the oil leak, you're interested in helping with relief efforts, or you just want to learn more than the mainstream media is telling you, we encourage you to use this web page to get involved at some level. It's also a good place to find out what 'OZ is doing to provide relief and assistance, like co-sponsoring benefit events.

Help 'OZ End Our Fiscal Year On a High Note
WWOZ's fiscal year ends June 30, and we need 100 new or renewing members to help us keep doing all we do for the New Orleans community and beyond. Membership is our most important source of funding for day-to-day operations, as well as for tasks like volunteer training and creating smartphone apps. It also helps us get more grants to fund big projects like the digitization of our massive CD collection. If you've already contributed recently, consider making an additional pledge to help us start the next fiscal year in good shape. And as always, your donation is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
Spotlight: Nashville Recovery
The BP oil disaster may be getting the lion's share of press lately, but Nashville is still recovering from the flooding it experienced in early May. According to city estimates, the flooding caused about $1.9 billion to privately owned property in Music City, plus millions more for publicly owned structures like LP Field. Country stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill will present Nashville Rising, a benefit concert at Bridgestone Arena on June 22, featuring huge acts like Miley Cyrus, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd and many more. Proceeds will benefit the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee Emergency Response Fund.
Essence Music Festival
The second-biggest music festival of the year hits downtown New Orleans July 4th weekend. The Louisiana Superdome will host some of the biggest names in music, including Gladys Knight (pictured), Janet Jackson, Earth Wind & Fire, Alicia Keys and War, but the Crescent City's home team — Kermit Ruffins, Irma Thomas, Rebirth, and more — will be there to represent. Beyond the music, the seminar series features speakers from Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Dr. Corey Hebert to Jada Pinkett-Smith and Al Sharpton talking about topics like HIV, education, and school violence. Don't miss this huge event, and stop by WWOZ while you're in town!
Live Broadcast Highlights
WWOZ has been busy bringing you live music from right here in the Crescent City as well as from places like the Washington D.C. Jazz Festival. We've got plenty more in store for you this summer, including Glen David Andrews live from d.b.a. in New Orleans on June 28. (The 'OZ Outreach Krewe will be there, too, signing up new/renewing members.) In the meantime, check out our photo highlights of recent live broadcasts like Galactic with Cyril Neville (pictured). And feel free to send us your own shots via Facebook or feedback@wwoz.org, and we might use them on wwoz.org!
Helping Musicians Help Themselves
Summer is a great time for musicians to put new projects together or to slow down after the deluge of festivals and recuperate. It's also an opportunity to look find out what resources are available to you in one of the most musician-friendly towns in the world. Whether you're interested in marketing your music, replacing damaged or lost instruments, finding a workspace, or looking for housing on a musician's budget, our Musician Resources page can be a big help.
Tell WWOZ Your Story
WWOZ wants to hear your most memorable musical experience from the Crescent City. Your story can be about a local festival, an awesome show, a touching memory about 'OZ, or anything in between! Just send us a story that you are passionate about. We want to capture your moment on camera and post it to our website to share with the 'OZ Nation. Send your favorite musical experience as plain text in the body of an email to yourstory@wwoz.org.
