Whether reading to children, responding to an interview question, or creating art through her beadwork, Cherice Harrison-Nelson of the Guardians of the Flame never stops teaching or celebrating New Orleans' indigenous cultures. She is a teacher, institution builder, and a culture-bearer in every aspect of her life. Maroon Queen Reesie works tirelessly with others to preserve and celebrate New Orleans' indigenous cultures and traditions. Her collaborations have led to the creation of the Big Chief Donald Harrison, Sr. Museum and Book Club, the Mardi Gras Indian Hall of Fame, theatrical productions, book publishing, and exhibitions that document indigenous traditions. Cherice is courageous and "won't bow down." She is spearheading a campaign to create "fair use" of the artistic creations of Louisiana culture bearers.  (Profile by Vickie Kennedy.)
