Video Stream: Ponderosa Stomp Music History Conference

The Ponderosa Stomp celebrates the unsung heroes of American music with "3 days of the best music you've never heard of” and WWOZ will be there streaming live video from the Stomp's Music History Conference on Thursday, October 5 and Friday, October 6. Session moderators include 'OZ show hosts David Kunian and Neil Pellegrin. Please note this is a video stream only and will not be broadcast on the radio. We're also doing a co-broadcast with WFMU on October 7, Noon-5p. Tune in to hear DJs from both stations drop knowledge and spin some deep cuts and rare tracks from the influential musicians that the Stomp is known for.

It's Blues & BBQ Time!

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation presents the 12th annual Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival in Lafayette Square, October 13-15. This year's lineup includes Robert Cray, Bobby Rush, Deacon John, and Guitar Lightnin' Lee among many others. And come hungry: this festival also features world class barbeque. If you can’t make it in person, WWOZ will be broadcasting live from the St. Charles Stage from 2-8:30p on Saturday and Sunday. Show Host Spotlight: Al Colón

Dr. Alan Colón had spent 14 years as a Distinguished NEH Professor of African Studies at Dillard University when a talk with Herlin Riley and David Torkanowsky convinced him that he should consider sharing the great music he loves with a wider audience as a WWOZ show host. Al felt strongly that this was his obligation as a cultural custodian, so after a period of training and serving as a substitute show host, he got his own show. Tune in Thursdays from 4-7pm to hear his unique presentation of great jazz musicians from the 1950s onward. We thank you, Al Colón, for sharing this great music with us!

Volunteer Spotlight: John Caulkins

John Caulkins has been an off-air volunteer at WWOZ since before Katrina. He's now our regular Front Desk Volunteer on Monday mornings, answering phones and digitizing music. John listens to a wide range of music from Opera to Country and Western music, and his eclectic tastes led him to discover WWOZ. As a 22-year US Air Force veteran who also spent two decades working as an airport specialist in electronics and radar, John is an example of the large pool of exceptional talent that our community radio station relies on to help us share the music and culture of New Orleans. Thank you, John Caulkins, for all you do!

New Orleans Film Festival, October 11-19

The New Orleans Film Fest is back and bigger than ever. Its 28th incarnation runs from Wednesday, October 11 to Thursday, October 19. The festival will again feature many films by of local interest (Fat Tuesday, Cut Off), plus several with music as their focus (Horace Tapscott: Musical Griot). And, with 53% of films by female directors and 45% by directors of color, 2017 boasts the most diverse line-up in the festival’s history. In addition to full-length features, the festival includes a large number of Louisiana shorts, music videos, and other productions.

Recipe: New Orleans Bread Pudding with Rum Sauce

A shout out to Liberty's Kitchen, who provided us with this great traditional bread pudding recipe. Libery's Kitchen is a non-profit that strives to create bright, healthy futures for young New Orleanians. Their Youth Development Program offers culinary and customer service training, as well as professional and life skills development, for people between the ages of 16 and 24 who are out of work and out of school.
