At the end of a Jazz Fest day back in 1986, I was out on the field (in what is now the Folk area) writing a stack of band signs for the next day's festival. Two men ambled up and stood, watching me write, though I was more interested in the fact that Aaron Neville was sitting at the next table over, quietly thinking about things, and that Joan Baez had just wandered off from the table I was working at. Those things happened back then.
It takes a lot of signs to make for one day’s talent list at Jazz Fest, and by 1986 I was pretty fast at it. I wrote the signs, one after another, as was my job to do. Finally one of the men turned to his friend and said, impressed, "This is a sign-makin' motherf*****!"
And thus I remain to this very day, 35 years after my first Jazz Fest, a sign-makin' motherf****** and I would be happy to make one for you!
As all the festivals I do in a year have been cancelled due to COVID this year, I’m in Massachusetts, working on some stuff here. But if you would like to celebrate The Next Fest Thing with your own happy sign, I’d be happy to write it for you and send it to you!
Signs are $30 plus shipping and $5 of every sign will go to support WWOZ as they carry the Groove forward and out into the universe!
Signs are 24" wide by 16" tall, on the same yellow (or white if you prefer) corrugated plastic that tells you at every Fest where to go and what to leave alone. Let me know what you'd like them to say, if you’d like them for indoors or outdoors, and if you plan to put them on the H-stakes, so I know how to orient the board.
What with this COVID situation we got here, the mail runs slow, so allow about 7 – 9 days for delivery – which means, order them soon so you'll have them! Overnight shipping is also possible, though it costs more. (Regular shipping for one is about $8, overnight about $30). Order one, or order as many as it takes to get through the entire talent roster for one day at Jazz Fest! I’ll make ‘em all and send 'em to you, with $5 from each going to support The Groove-iest station in the country!
