A new book on the media coverage surrounding Hurricane Katrina and its effect on memory came out on April 1 entitled "Flood of Images: Media, Memory, and Hurricane Katrina." The author, Bernie Cook, will be present for a release party and film screening at Cafe Istanbul on Monday, April 27 from 5-7pm. Cook, Director of Film and Media Studies at Georgetown University in Washington D.C., will lead a discussion about the book and the impact of the national 24-hour Katrina media cycle on memories of the flooding, including how it complicated understandings of the storm, flood, and the aftermath.  Cook's book also touches on the documentary and fictional filmmakers that were drawn to the topic in subsequent years, including Spike Lee and the HBO drama "Treme."

To tie in directly with the book's topic, filmmakers Katherine Cecil, Luisa Dantas, and Rebecca Snedeker will also be present to screen and discuss scenes from the films "Land of Opportunity" (2010), "Race" (2010), and "Faubourg Treme" (2007). Jim McCormick of The Write Brothers will perform original music.
