Tune in to the '50s R&B Show with host Neil Pellegrin this Tuesday from 7-10pm CT as Barbara Hawkins of The Dixie Cups joins him in the studio!
Barbara, along with her sister Rosa Lee Hawkins and their cousin, Joan Marie Johnson, formed the group in the early '60s. They were brought to New York in '64 to make their debut recordings with producers/songwriters Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich, and Phil Spector. In '64 and '65, the New Orleans trio hit the charts with "People Say," "You Should Have Seen the Way He Looked At Me," "Iko Iko," "Little Bell" and their smash, "Chapel of Love."
Joan Marie passed away in 2016 and Rosa Lee passed in 2022, leaving Barbara as the last surviving original member.
Barbara will be performing with a contemporary lineup of The Dixie Cups at Loyola University's Nunemaker Hall this Thursday, March 7 at 7:30pm.
