Chubby Carrier & The Bayou Swamp Band features Roy "Chubby" Carrier, Jr. who hails from a family of zydeco legends, and has made his own mark as a Grammy-winning songwriter, performer, and bandleader. A native of Church Point, Louisiana, the younger Carrier, born in 1967, grew up in a musical household: his father and grandfather (Roy Senior and Warren) and cousins (Bebe and Calvin) are all hailed as premier zydeco musicians. “When they started performing and playing that sound, it just did something to me,” Chubby says. “I wanted to be a part of it.” Carrier started out in his father’s band as a young teen, and grabbed attention for his skills as a drummer, although his accordion chops are what he’s known for today. At 17 he got the call from the great Terrence Simien, and was soon touring the world and opening for the likes of Fats Domino with Simien’s band, the Mallet Playboys.
In 1989 Carrier formed his own group, the Bayou Swamp Band, which included his brothers Troy and Kevin. The band has issued nearly a dozen albums, with the 1993 Dance All Night winning broad cross-genre acclaim, and 2010’s Zydeco Junkie earning a Grammy Award for Best Zydeco or Cajun Music. They continue to wow audiences at home and around the globe with their large and energetic shows.
