Hot jazz, hot topics and hot weather — it must be Satchmo SummerFest! The ninth annual festival, put on by French Quarter Festivals Inc., runs from July 30 through August 2 in celebration of native New Orleanian and possibly the world's most famous musician, Louis Armstrong.
Music Festival at the Mint
Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2
Satchmo SummerFest features a free two-day music festival at the Old U.S. Mint on three stages with great New Orleans food and beverages. There will be live traditional jazz, brass band and contemporary jazz music, along with hands-on workshops and performances for children, from noon to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Performers include the Soul Rebels Brass Band, James Andrews, Yoshio Toyama & the Dixie Saints, Jeremy Davenport, Leah Chase, Shamarr Allen, Kermit Ruffins, Lionel Ferbos, and many more.

WWOZ Live Broadcast: Saturday, August 1

2 - 2:45 p.m. We'll bring you the sounds of the Young New Orleans Traditional Brass Band, established by the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park with the help of the Tremé Brass Band and the Storyville Stompers.
3 - 4:15 p.m. N.O. Jazz & Heritage Foundation Program Director Sharon Martin lends us her gospel-tinged voice for a set.
4:30 - 5:45 p.m. Trombonist and vocalist Glen David Andrews
& The Lazy Six perform some traditional jazz and classic New Orleans tunes.

Satchmo Art Show
Thursday, July 30 - Friday, July 31
The SummerFest opens with a Satchmo Art Show and reception at the Crescent City Brewhouse, 527 Decatur Street. The reception will be on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Satchmo Club Strut
Friday, July 31
On Friday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., Frenchmen St. hosts the Satchmo Club Strut. Several blocks of clubs and businesses have live music inside or out front, and one ticket gets you into most of the Strut's events.
Read the complete schedule and venue list for details, and don't miss the Treme Brass Band's strut along Frenchmen St. as they play in front of participating clubs from 8:00 p.m. to midnidght. There's also a jazz dance contest at 8pm on the street outside 500 Frenchmen St., accompanied by the Treme Brass Band.

Experts from around the world will gather to discuss, listen and learn about Louis Armstrong at the Satchmo SummerFest's world-renowned annual symposium. Seminars will be located on the 3rd floor of the Old U.S. Mint, and they are free and open to the public. Stay tuned for more info.
