The feature-length music documentary "Duct Tape Messiah" comes to Chickie Wah Wah on Saturday, January 21, 2012. The film captures the life of legendary Texan crooner Blaze Foley, who died homeless and with no official albums released. Since his murder in 1989, Foley's music has been covered by Wilie Nelson, Merle Haggard, John Prine, Lyle Lovett, Nancy Griffith, and more. Both Lucinda Williams and Townes Van Zandt penned songs about him. Blaze's life was interesting from the start-- he was born in a treehouse, grew up in western Texas, and performed with a family gospel act as a youngster. Upon moving to Austin, the duct tape fan usually slept on friends' couches or in clubs.
Like many talented musicians, Foley's musical career is marked with happenstance tragedies-- bankrupt record companies, lost and stolen masters, limited pressings, and broken contracts. In the years following his death, Foley has reached a level of fame and infamy from both his music and wild personal life, but most of all, a great deal of respect from the many fans of his music.
Foley's friend and colleague Gurf Morlix will also be performing. Morlix collaborated with Foley, and is celebrating the release of his latest CD, a 15-song collection of Blaze Foley songs titled "Blaze Foley's 113th Wet Dream."
