Congratulations to all of our listeners who helped us slam it out of the park during the 2010 Fall Membership drive. While our local support continues to grow, the headline this year is the steady growth in our out-of-town membership—currently north of 48% of total donations. We’ve seen this trend since 2005, but now we’re poised to cross the 50% threshold. Thank you Paris! Thank you New York! Thank you Japan! Still waiting for Kazakhstan!

It’s now autumn in New Orleans, and that means Crescent City Blues and BBQ Fest, Voodoo Music Experience, Boo Carré Halloween & Harvest Fest, Fiesta Latina, Congo Square Rhythms Fest and bunches of pre- and post-Saints-ebrations and Thanksgivingmas warm-ups.

WWOZ thanks our 1459 new and renewing members, show hosts, musicians, volunteers, staff, engineers and food donors for a stunningly successful Fall Membership Drive! We hope you enjoyed all the amazing live music over the course of the week—it was a great way for us to kick off our 30th anniversary celebration. Bravo, 'OZ Nation, on helping us stay around for another 30 years. Remember, you don’t need to wait until the next membership drive to show your support—you can make your pledge anytime. 2010 Voodoo Experience

In honor of WWOZ's 30th birthday, Voodoo Experience will provide 30 LOA Lounge passes to 'OZ listeners as membership thank you gifts for a pledge of $450. With lots of exclusive benefits, this is a great way to support 'OZ and see tons of great live music.

One of the biggest music festivals in New Orleans is on Halloween weekend (October 29-31). The Voodoo Experience includes a wide range of music, from international acts like Ozzy Osbourne to local groups like the Soul Rebels and Big Sam's Funky Nation (pictured) on seven stages in City Park. There will also be several interactive art installations scattered around the festival area, as well as plenty of art, crafts, and food for sale. WWOZ will broadcast live from Voodoo, so stay tuned to find out which acts we'll bring you on air and online. Our Outreach Krewe will also be there signing up members.

The French Market's Boo Carré Halloween & Harvest Fest

On Saturday, October 23, the second annual Boo Carré festival takes place throughout the French Market. Costumed kids get a Boo Carré bag and can trick or treat in retail shops, as well as at special booths in Dutch Alley and the Farmers Market. You'll also hear live performances by Lynn Drury, Amanda Shaw, and more. The event closes out with a procession from the Farmer's Market to Washington Artillery Park for a beautiful pumpkin lighting ceremony!

Halloween Weekend Events

The French Market hosts its Halloween kick-off party on October 29 with live music from Margie Perez and Mia Borders, as well as a costume contest. On October 30, catch Blaine Kern's Krewe of Halloween parade, with 17 floats rolling through the French Quarter. Also on October 30, the Southern Food and Beverage Museum hosts a Day of the Dead Celebration with Jack Carrel as part of "New Orleans con Sabor Latino." On Halloween day, creep on down to Voodoo Authentica's 12th annual VoodooFest, which features lectures on Voodoo traditions, live music, food, and a healing ritual.

Fiesta Latina & Congo Square Rhythms Fest

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation presents a pair of free outdoor events at the Old U.S. Mint in the French Quarter next month: Fiesta Latina celebrates Spanish and Latin culture and its impact on New Orleans on November 13. The Congo Square Rhythms Festival honors the historic role of Congo Square as the birthplace of American music with the Tom Dent Congo Square Symposium on November 13 and a music festival on November 14. Both events include dance and musical performances, an art market, and plenty of food for sale.

Volunteer Spotlight: Gail Furillo

As a volunteer-powered community radio station, WWOZ places extraordinary value on people who donate their time. Gail Furillo (pictured), a member of 'OZ for 6 years, routinely goes above and beyond the call of duty. For our Fall Membership Drive, Gail raised around $1300 by calling friends and relatives who listen to 'OZ online and getting them to donate. "Since I am very enthusiastic about 'OZ it was easy to transfer the enthusiasm," she says. Way to go, Gail!

October Recipe: Oven Barbecue Shrimp & Sweet Potato Grits

This month's recipe for barbecue shrimp and sweet potato grits comes from Priscilla Yee of Concord, California. Use Louisiana shrimp if you can get 'em, and you barbecue them in your oven instead of outdoors—perfect if you live somewhere with cold fall weather. Asian chili garlic sauce adds some extra spice to this mouth-watering dish. If you like the recipe, then check out Louisiana Cookin' magazine.
