We've just completed our first full year of New Orleans Calling here at WWOZ! And we're thrilled at our success over the last twelve months, bringing the music, sounds, people, and life of New Orleans to listeners around the country and the world, in a program only WWOZ could produce.

To celebrate, and as a special thank-you to our listeners, we've assembled a program of some of the very best moments from this past year, including a little R&B, a little jazz, a couple of secret New Orleans recipes, and a visit with a Mardi Gras Indian. Plus a special bonus, or "lagniappe" as we like to say in the Crescent City -- some new and unreleased music, recorded just for New Orleans Calling at the historic Basin Street Station. And in the words of trumpeter Leroy Jones, this is "Mo Cream From The Crop!"

We heard from trumpeter James Andrews, talking about the longevity of his grandfather Jessie Hill's hit "Ooh Poo Pah Doo," from our episode titled "A Visit To The Ooh Poo Pah Doo," which featured a look at the extended family of musicians connected to the Ooh Poo Pah Doo Bar, including James, Trombone Shorty, and Glen David Andrews.

Allen Toussaint and Benny Spellman spoke about the beginnings of their R&B careers in the 1950s and 1960s, from our episode titled "Lipstick Traces."

Sharon Martin and her band First Take performed "Take The A Train" just for New Orleans Calling, at the historic Basin Street Station.  For more from Sharon's set, check out our episode "Fish Fries and Green Gumbo."

Evan Christopher led is through the history of jazz slarinet in New Orleans, from the episode "Rampart Street Ramble."

Frank Brigtsen described the seasonal specialty Green Gumbo, or Gumbo Z'Herbes, also from our episode "Fish Fries and Green Gumbo."

Our closer look at Dr John's "Litanie Des Saints" is from our episode "The Piano Player."

Our highlights about rhythms and Mardi Gras Indians are taken from two different related episodes: "Carnival Time" and "All on A Mardi Gras Day."

Leroy Jones' okra recipe and John Besh's description of New Orleans cooking traditions are from the episode "Born In A Cast Iron Pot."

And the highlights from the Boudin stories are from our episode "Boudin: The New Orleans Music Stories."
