Restored: The Livewire Music CalendarAfter taking a year off for the pandemic, the WWOZ Livewire has come roaring back! You can hear it on the air at the top of every odd hour, or check it out online at wwoz.org/calendar. For example, this Friday night, you can see the Treme Brass Band at Vaughan's, the Delfeayo Marsalis Quintet at Snug Harbor, and Big Chief Monk Boudreaux at Tipitina's. We've also included information on which shows are outdoors, as well as our continuing list of sets streaming on the internet. So whichever way you want to see New Orleans musicians, we've got you covered. |
|
The Return of Second LinesSecond line parades are allowed in New Orleans again as of Friday, May 28. As New Orleans continues to ease its coronavirus-related restrictions, many regular parades may not return until late August. We hope that regular annual second lines will return in late August. |

Volunteer Profile: Bill SasserPhotographer Bill Sasser got involved with WWOZ after the devastating Haiti earthquake in 2010, where he met Maryse Dejean, our volunteer coordinator. A North Carolina native who's lived in New Orleans since the 1990s, Bill's work has appeared in the Gambit, One Autonomy, Salon, the Christian Science Monitor, Art Voices, and more. "WWOZ provides a chance to meet all these people you otherwise would never meet.... I like being able to check out some of these things firsthand. You can sit at home and listen to the radio for years and hear stuff going on in the studio and then [by volunteering], you can actually be there and see it firsthand. You can actually be there and be a small part of it." Thanks for all the great images, Bill! |

Creole Tomato Fest, July 3The French Market Creole Tomato Festival, a rite of summer in the French Quarter, happens July 3 with a mix of virtual and in-person activities. You can get fresh creole tomatoes at the French Market and enjoy live music, with locations and acts TBA. And check out recipes, cooking demonstrations, streaming performances by New Orleans musicians, and more family friendly activities on line. |

Recipe: Salsa with VariationsJust in time for creole tomato season, this approach to salsa is less a precise recipe and more of a flexible procedure. It's very simple and vastly forgiving, so it's great for cooking newbies, only requiring a blender and a knife. It's great with chips or tacos, of course, but also eggs, beans and rice, and anything grilled, especially fish. We also include numerous substitutions for the six basic ingredients, as well as some stylistic variations. |
