December Membership Events

Heads up on a couple of upcoming WWOZ Membership events. On December 3, we'll be participating in #GivingTuesday, the international day of online giving at the beginning of the holiday season. And we'll be celebrating our birthday on December 4 with special programming and surprises throughout the day.

Treme Creole Gumbo Festival + Congo Square Rhythms Festival

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation presents two of its popular festivals on one weekend: the Treme Creole Gumbo Festival and the Congo Square Rhythms Festival happen in parallel on November 16 & 17 in Louis Armstrong Park and in the adjoining Congo Square. There will be two stages of music celebrating the New Orleans traditions that spring from the African diaspora. Performers include Kermit Ruffins, Bamboula 2000, Charmaine Neville, Hot-8 and tons more. More than just music, this double-festival weekend also offers loads of local food and an incredible arts market. Admission is free.

In Memoriam: Donn Peabody

WWOZ volunteers and staff are saddened by the news of Donn Peabody’s passing on October 19. Donn joined WWOZ as a volunteer in June 2015. We immediately put him to work during special events and used his mellifluous voice on the airwaves. When we complimented Donn on his radio voice, he was quick to relate how Ellis Marsalis helped him overcome speech problems he had as a young boy. That constant expression of appreciation and positivity made meeting Donn Peabody special and remarkable for everyone who met him.

Volunteer Profile: Ben Russell

Ben Russell, a WWOZ intern in 2014, is back in New Orleans after graduating from Tulane University, pursuing a law degree and passing the bar. Ben shares what surprised him most about WWOZ volunteers: "(They) aren’t just music fans; they’re New Orleans enthusiasts! Right now, I’m an attorney at a law firm on Poydras Street. I can actually see the (WWOZ) studio building from my office! More than anything, OZ has taught me what a wonderful place New Orleans is how privileged I am to call it home." Welcome back, Ben!

Recipe: Homemade Cranberry Sauce, Louisiana-style

Some people have a sentimental attachment to canned cranberry sauce for the holidays. If you'd like to go in a different (and less gelatinous) direction, it's not hard to make cranberry sauce from scratch. It will contain recognizable cranberries, and you can add flavor to it according to your taste, as here with some cayenne and fresh ginger. Cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, orange zest and vanilla extract are other good candidates for flavoring homemade cranberry sauce. You can make it the day before serving, so it's easy to work into holiday logistics.
