Legendary jazz drummer and native New Orleanian Herlin Riley stopped by the Allison Miner Music Heritage Stage for an interview during Jazz Fest this afternoon. Riley is often featured on Jazz at Lincoln Center, and has played with a Wynton Marsalis, Doctor John, Harry Connick, Jr. and many, many others.
Among the fascinating nuggets: he doesn't recall ever not knowing how to play the drums. And, the foot pedal and modern drum kit were invented in New Orleans.
