Headed downtown for the last day of the South by Southwest Music Conference & Festival. The last official day is Sunday with a few night time shows but for most people Saturday is the last day of the festival. With a cold front that moved in overnight the temperature has dropped and the cloudy skies, todays crowd was not as large as the huge crowd on Friday. Me and Boudin Man Split up with him dropping me off downtown. He headed out for a Day Party at the Birdhouse Gallery & for the Closing Party for the “Where They At" New Orleans Bounce and Hip Hop in Words and Pictures exhibit. Bounce Performers Vocah Redu and others performed With D.J. Lefty Parker spinning the tunes at this event. Boudin Man also went to check out Katey Red performing with D.J. Rusty Lazer a few blocks over at the "Mess With Texas Fest" before heading back to the Birdhouse Gallery to check out D.J. Jubilee closing out the day party. An Official NOLA Block Party SXSW Bounce Showcase was on the plans later at Submerge hosted by Wild Wayne featuring many of the Stars of New Orleans Bounce. Meanwhile I headed to a few different day parties in the Red River area before jumping over to the east side, the cold weather kept crowds a little light making everything very accessible. Later after most of the showcases were winding down, numerous "private" (implied sarcasm) parties drew huge crowds late into the night. A.J. headed to Antones where musicians paid tribute to Alex Chilton taking over the time slot originally slated for his band, Big Star, before he died of a heart attack on Wednesday. The remaining members of Big Star played a set of their best-loved songs alongside a slew of guests including M. Ward, the Meat Puppets' Curt Kirkwood, R.E.M.'s Mike Mills, Chuck Prophet, Evan Dando, the Watson Twins, John Doe and Sondre Lerche. Chilton's publicist Heather West read a letter from his wife Laura that described Chilton's recent years in New Orleans as "simple and relaxed," but as ever before, centered on listening to and enjoying a range of music. Got a flat on the car on the way back to our crash pad Saturday night. Thanks to the good people at Firestone we were able to get a new tire Sunday morning. We ate a Tex-Mex lunch as the tire was being changed and we were on the road heading back to New Orleans by high noon. Thanks to Everyone in Austin and South by Southwest for treating us so nice.
