The Dixie Cups (below) may have been teenagers back when they made Iko Iko in 1965, but just like so many of this city's talents they proved that great showmanship doesn't age. With synchronized dance moves that certainly made their way into the crowd, R&B harmonies and great sense of humor to throw you way back, they had the audience transfixed.

(Admittedly, as a twenty-something, I had a different artist as the staple of my own sock-hops.)

Speaking of synchronized dance moves, when DJ Jubilee suggested we "Get it ready, get it ready, get it ready now", everybody knew what was in store. It was a short set and undoubtedly there were upwards of 20 dance moves left to be done, but everybody left with a grin.

Just around the corner at the Gentilly Stage, it seemed word had gotten out that Big Sam's Funky Nation knows how to unleash some fiery funk. Not only can Big Sam Williams (pictured below) manipulate a trombone in just the right ways, he knows a thing or two about getting his wiggle on as well.
